Silver is on her way to North Dakota as I type this. I dropped her off at the airport last night so she could catch the red-eye to Minneapolis, where she's now waiting to get on a teeny-tiny prop plane for the last leg of her journey to Grand Forks.
Tomorrow and Tuesday is her "Freshmen Getting Started", i.e. Freshmen orientation, and it's something we both felt she should do on her own. Wednesday night I'll pick her up at McCarran, but this trip signals the beginning of the true nest-leaving stage. In a few weeks, all packed-up, we'll both fly to North Dakota, where I'll spend a few days with her before band camp begins, making sure she has all the stuff she needs for her dorm room, plus proper clothing to help her survive the brutal winter there.
And that's it, then. Fully fledged, she'll start her adult life. And I'll be left with an empty nest.
Until her sisters graduate high school and decide to come live with me, that is...sometimes it happens in reverse, you know. And it's not always a bad thing.

Wine..... wine will help anything!
Nah. I'll just tough it out and use skype and gchat A LOT.
I hope she has a wonderful trip.
Full-fledged? Not quite. Perhaps half-fledged.
She's not full-fledged until she signs her name on an apartment lease after landing her first real job... ;)
Congrats on the empty nest. I'm looking forward to that as well, but a few years off.
Unless I send TheBoy to military school and BabyGirl G. to a convent.
Which *could* happen...
... plus proper clothing to help her survive the brutal winter there.
Which is brutal, indeed. I know from first-hand experience, albeit on the extreme NW side of NoDak.
As for that reverse empty-nest thing? That happened to me. SN1 left California (and his Mom) shortly after his 18th birthday and came to live with me for a couple o' few years... which was very cool. And interesting, to say the VERY least. Stories... we have STORIES!
should I start knitting? What does she need?
Brigid, she's having a blast and feels (almost) all grown up. I LOVE skype! :)
Jay, I kind of like having the buggers around...of course, my twins are in England, so that's almost like military school, I suppose. ;)
Yeah, I hear you about the apartment/job thing, college is an extended childhood, in a way.
Buck, I am concerned about the weather. This is a kid who complains when it's 50 degrees here! Of course, she is quick to mention all the tunnels that connect the buildings on campus: no need to go outside!
I have no problem with my other daughters living with me when they're of age. As long as they're either in school or working, it's fine. Any of those stories for public consumption?
Noonie, that's so sweet of you to offer!
I'm not quite sure what she'll need. I know we definitely have to go with layers. Email me at lucrativepain@yahoo.com, and we'll talk!
Oh my God. Already? Wow. I thought maybe at the end of summer or the beginning of fall. Hmmm. Well good luck Silver!
As for moving in, I still don't know all of my options. I don't know what I'll do, you know?
Any of those stories for public consumption?
Danged few. And we're reluctant to tell tales out of school... to protect the guilty. On BOTH sides. :D
Chaos, she's at her Freshman orientation and will be back on Wednesday. She leaves for good on August 16th.
Whatever you decide to do after school, I'll always support you. I hope you know that!
Buck, now you've shattered all my hopes that you'd dish the dirt! :P
Good luck to Silver. Time goes by so quickly!
As for me moving in, I'll have to think about it. It'd be fun!
Tally, we would have a blast! I should be living in Texas by then, and there are EXCELLENT schools in the area I'm interested it. Just some food for thought...
