$2.40? Well, now we know where they're making their margins.
Every commercial coffee brewing gizmo in every kitchen I've worked in has had an easily accessed spigot for hot water. It generally fills a one pint tea pot fast as to make timing it pointless. Even acknowledging that they still had to (well, should...) wash the pot and cup that is a bit on the stupid side.
I would guess it was more a case of a waitron that either couldn't find or couldn't be bothered to find the MISC button on the register. Or a management type that was all offended that "their" teabags weren't good enough.
Kind of makes me wonder if they charge for ice water. Same expense involved for dish washing, wear/tear on the water filter, etc.
B, most likely. But really? Charging me for hot water? Seems a little chintzy to me.
Anon, this is a tiny, family-run place. The owner/manager is the waitress. They hand write the tickets and just ring up the amount. I think they're just trying to make a buck any way they can. It's sad.
Old NFO, neither. Too much food, too quickly. I know better than that!
We used to have the problem, back in the day, where people would come into the restaurant, order waters all around, then ask for extra sugar packets and a bowl of cut lemons. It took a while, but we figured out they were making their own lemonade at their tables to circumvent ordering ours! Owner got wise and started charging for lemons after the first two slices, and water was no longer free becuase of "environmental" reasons.
The only reason I asked for the hot water is because they don't have decaf tea. So I have to bring my own. Otherwise I'd have cold water, which is free anyway! My roomie ordered a diet coke, so it's not like we were cheapo! (and I still tipped, Tip Karma is a bitch!)

how BIZARRE!
hee!
I know! I can't believe they made me pay for hot water! That is bizarre...;)
Why were you barfing in a Chinese buffet?
@ SCI-FI
Really? If there was any "restaurant" that should make people hurl a Chinese buffet should rank pretty high. The very concept is scary.
@ Christina
Out of curiosity how much did they charge for what volume of hot water?
Anon.
SCI-FI, I think I was eating too fast. We were there right before they closed, so I felt rushed. :(
Anon, they charged me $2.40 for a small pot of hot water. I guess she DID have to heat it up, but still...

People will try anything to save a buck.
