Oh, really?!

I've recently had two very manly men tell me completely opposite things, and I want YOU, my dear readers, to tell me which one of them is right.

Men squeeing. Yes or no?

I agree with Manly Man #2, that on occasion it's perfectly acceptable for a man to squee.

Manly Man #1 thinks only "men" (yes, he made the airquotes!) squee. (And women too, of course!)

What do you think? Opine in comments, please.

I side with manly Man #1.

Women squee.

Men don't squee.

Nothing wrong with that, either.

Anyone can Squee. You just need the right reason.

Oh, sure, men squee. It doesn't usually sound like a squee, though, it tends to come out as "Woooooooo!" or "YeeeeeeeeeeeeHaw!" or "OO-RAH!".

Truth to tell, there's no real way to tell the difference between a really motivated YEEEEEEEEEE-HAW!!! and a really motivated EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!! until you see if they end with an extra explosion of sound or just run out of breath on the "eee" part.

On the other hand, if they wave jazz-hands as they squee, they're "men". Buut if they fire a gun in the air, they're idiot boys, not even "men."

As a person of male gender, I freely admit to squeeing on occasion, when given sufficient motivation.

But I am an engineer, so maybe not the best datapoint... ;)

I'm plenty manly, and acknowledge making the manly equivalent of the squee (usually a "hot damn" or something like it) in a manly manner.

I think men squee. But like Wing said, it doesn't sound like "squeeee".

I feel that I must clarify. I mean, literally, "SQUEEEE". Whether it's just said, as in the word, or the sound ("eeeeeee"). Going "Boo-yah!" or "Hot-diggety-dog!" is NOT squeeing. In my not so humble opinion.

hmmmm....

take it from a father of 3 girls with 4 shotguns who is man enough to wear pink (at their cheer competitions), sing show tunes (rehearsing them for their High School musicals)and admit to his past theatrical days (insert Marin County Karate chop).

no. nope. NO!

caveat/exception to prove the rule: Real men may squeeee if as part of a parody, role play or in process of mocking Joel Grey, or mimicking Kurt on Glee (who it is OK for real men to like/have empathy for).

I thought I would express an opinion, until the topic of Glee came up.

I'm with #1. Women Squee Men don't. Men have an equivalent as stated. The Yeehaaw, Whooohooo. "YES!" while pulling the fist down in victory.

I'm with BE06 I don't even see men squeee when they are at their kids cheer competition happily dressed in pink or whatever team color, chanting the teams cheer and clapping along. All actions that they would never hear the end of from their gunny and manly friends.

I say the SQUEEEE is acceptable as long as it is saved for truly SQUEEE worthy occasions.

Depends on the manner of the squee. In general I'd say it's OK. Then again, Breda claims I'm not a real man so take my opinion for what it's worth.*

*1 cent given today's inflation.

After reading through the comments and reflecting upon some of the more "SQUEEE!" worthy moments of my life to try and remember whether or not I did, in fact, "squee", I have come to the conclusion that men (or at the very least this man) are physically incapable of "SQUEEEE!". My vocal abilities don't go anywhere near the range required for a solid "squee". My theory is that vocal range determines whether a person squees or yeehaws.

As for acceptability, I would have no problem making a squee noise if such were possible given the right motivation...like someone giving me a brand new 1911...for free...to call my very own, to hug and squeeze and call it "George".

I don't squee ... I've never actually heard anyone 'squee' as defined by christina above ...
maybe it's just an American thing.

Mongo no squeee

Guffaw in AZ said...

I probably squee.
I just don't do it in public, or admit it.

I say yes, but only among trusted friends.

I happen to be married to a manly man and have never heard him squee...nope, not once. However, he uses the word 'cute' a lot..."wouldn't this be cute?"..."wouldn't that be cute?" It's a strange thing to hear. He also favored a white blanket with pink rosebuds on it while in boot camp...says a guy his size can get away with doing, wearing, saying whatever he damn well pleases, and you know what? I believe him. If I ever hear him squee, I'll be sure to update you.

My take is that if someone's grasp on his/her masculinity tenuous enough that it requires articulation on this exact point, whether or not you squee is more of a separate issue.

Did this come up in #GBC? This sounds like the sort of retarded "This is my hill to die on!" someone there would come up with. Probably Raudjbjorn or however you spell that.

Stingray, it was NOT a topic on #GBC...not that I'm aware of, anyway!

Just conversation between myself and two male friends. Which started the debate.

I willing to let my wife have a go at making me go "SQEEEEE"

I mean, it's worth a try ain't it? ;^)

WAY late to this party, and I'm surprised no one mentioned the obvious: Men only squee (and it hurt to even TYPE that) if or when they take one where no man EVAH wants to take one. Think: cup.

SCI-FI said...

Wait.

1) Alan said anyone can squee.

2) Wing said men who squee and wave jazz-hands are "men."

3) Is this Alan at the NRA convention last year?

Oh, dear.

John B said...

I have been known to squee.

@Shannon, I can't use the word 'cute' because I'm LDS by birth, and that's the harshest four letter word we're allowed!
