As I was bustling around my patient last night, hooking her up to various IVs, etc., she looked me in the eye and asked," Am I gonna die?"
I fumbled for a moment and then spouted these words of wisdom," Well, we're ALL gonna die, eventually..."
I'm surprised she didn't punch me in the face.
One of my paramedic partners had a habit of answering, dead pan "Yes." My stock answer is,"Not today," while thinking please not on my shift.
parascribe, the strange thing is, she DID end up dying, luckily not on my shift. I was very bummed about it, because one of the last things she said to me was, "I feel like you're the only person here who cares what happens to me."
Which was completely untrue, I work with an amazing bunch of people. But, still...
