Just walk away.

I know I've blogged about this before, but it bears repeating:

Don't lie. If you have no intention of tipping, just walk away. Don't tell the front desk, "Oh, I left my wallet/purse/ATM card upstairs in my room, I'll come back with the tip. What time do y'all close?"

I can count on the fingers of one hand how many times a client who's said something like that actually followed through, and that's if I amputated three fingers and a thumb.

  1. I found a new massage therapist in the new little burg where I am living. She has her own little business, renting a small space in a small office building. She went out on her own after working her butt off on commission with bad tippers.

I told her your story about the couples massage and the $5 tip. She was astounded.

  2. I'm glad you found a new therapist, and Brigid, I'm working on being my own boss. I'm also getting sick of the corporate crap I have to put up with.

  3. Yeah, corporate stupid is beginning to piss me off too. On many levels. I got rid of one recently. I hope it helps.

Oh, this is not about me is it?

Being your own boss is very demanding yet very rewarding too.

    Getting stiffed sucks period.

  4. Wow! I wonder how often this happens to massage therapists across the country?
