I should have internalized years ago, since I certainly knew it to be true:

DEFECTIVE VACUUM CLEANERS WON'T CLEAN YOUR CARPET.

Holy crap, what a pain in the ass.

    Wax the floors, then you don't have to worry about keeping the carpet clean.
