Repeat after me:

lie, lay, lain

lay, laid, laid

Two completely different verbs that may NOT be used interchangeably.

I should've been an editor. My (not-always-so) inner grammar Nazi would then at least occasionally be appeased.

*sigh*

This is the rock upon which I most frequently stumble.

Believe me, I have PLENTY of grammar issues of my own, especially when it comes to punctuation (never learned it, and in German school English punctuation was not emphasized). But the lie/lay thing is a huge pet peeve of mine. In this area of the U.S. it is especially bad. "Lay down." My answer is always, "Lay down WHAT?" What pisses me off the most is seeing it wrong in print. What are editors for anymore?!
